Masaya
Volcano
Masaya may be Nicaragua’s most notorious volcano, and it is certainly
the most obviously active, constantly belching white, sulfurous smoke.
This is a ruined volcano, with one dormant and one active crater. Upon
entering the national park, a vehicle can proceed up the slopes, past
volcanic rocks and the scorched trails of old lava flows, to the rim of
the most active crater. Peering over the protective wall, visitors can
look straight down into the crater itself.
The
crater alone is a powerful sight, but those more adventurous could hike
up the long stairway to a peak above for a view of Masaya’s other active
crater, or to the rim of the dormant crater to see the forest that has
grown within. Evening visitors can take a guided trip through a cave
system formed by magma long ago.
