Catarina
Not far from the city of Granada is a crater lake called La Laguna de
Apoyo (the Support Lake), and perched on the rim of what was long ago a
volcano is the village of Catarina. Little restaurants and artisan shops
pepper the rim, but the best part of this visit is the view. Volcan
Mombacho looms to the west and Volcan Masaya to the east, and to the
south lay Granada and Lake Nicaragua beyond, stretching into hazy
distance. Directly below is the lake itself, clear and cold and so deep
that its depth has not yet been measured, a blue jewel cradled by
heavily forested slopes. Come by for lunch or a little shopping and
drink in a
spectacular sight.
